"The Runners Series" 1980-1990
The early runners paintings were figurative and naturalistic. At some point, the dynamics and rhythms of interacting arms and legs became more interesting than the particular figurative elements themselves. Anatomy began to dissolve into overall abstract arrangements of shapes expressing the energies of tightly knit groups of runners. The extended development of the series freed me from the concerns of subject matter. I always knew how and where to begin, and once begun, I could invent and improvise.
